今天我們就來學習「畢業典禮」的相關用語吧!
*畢業典禮 = commencement = graduation ceremony.
graduation 就是「畢業」的意思 (graduate 是動詞)，而 ceremony 是「典禮」的意思，所以 graduation ceremony 也是「畢業典禮」的意思。
commencement 是 commence 的名詞， 而 commence 是動詞，意思是「開始」的意思。「畢業典禮」是一個階段的結束，但也象徵人生另一個階段的開始，所以用 commencement 這個字來代表「畢業典禮」真的是太有意義了。
美國的大學常常會在畢業典禮邀請有成就的傑出校友 (distinguished alumnus) 或是企業家 (entrepreneur) 來演講，一方面傳承人生經驗及哲學，另一方面也勉勵即將踏出校門的職場新鮮人。這種演講就稱為 commencement speech (commencement address).
例句:
A: The commencement is going to be held on June 9. Are you excited?
(畢業典禮將於 6/9 舉行。你興奮嗎?)
B: Totally. My mother is going to be there. I'm also looking forward to the commencement speech by Jeremy Lin.
(當然! 我媽也會參加。我很期待林書豪的演講呢!)
在畢業典禮上除了會有重量級來賓演講外，畢業生代表致詞、學生穿著學士服領畢業證書、撥穗都是典禮很重要的一環，而當典禮結束時大家還會將學士帽丟向空中，更是經典的橋段，我們也一起來學這些用語吧!
通常要代表該屆的畢業生上台致詞，在學業方面的表現非常優秀，GPA成績很高，所以能成為致詞代表是非常榮耀的事。而「畢業生代表」的英文為 valedictorian.
例句:
Mary is the valedictorian. She is going to give a speech in the commencement.
(Mary將是畢業生代表，她將在畢業典禮中致答詞)

再來我們來學習一下「學士服、學士帽」的英文吧!
「學士服」的英文是 gown (長袍), 「學士帽」的英文是 cap. 而在英文中常將這兩個合起來稱為 cap and gown. 所以穿畢業服及戴畢業帽 的英文就是 wear a cap and gown
例句:
Tomorrow is the graduation day. Don't forget to wear a cap and gown.
(明天是畢業的日子。別忘了要穿學士服及戴學士帽哦!)
畢業典禮最重要的就是那一張「畢業證書」，因為它象徵著你這些年的付出。「畢業證書」的英文是 diploma
例句:
I'm going to get my diploma tomorrow at the commencement. I can't wait.
(我明天將在畢業典禮上領到畢業證書，我等不及了!)
畢業典禮過程中，最為引人注目的事項除了是頒發「畢業証書」外，另一個就是「撥穗禮」了。「撥穗」代表稻穗或麥穗成熟，象徵畢業生已學有所成，可以展翅高飛。而「撥穗」動作，就是將學士帽上的流蘇「由右撥到左」，至於典故我就沒有去研究了。
「流蘇」的英文是 tassel, 而「撥穗」的英文是 turn the tassel (from the right to the left)
例句:
In the commencement, the President turn tassels (from the right to the left) for the graduates. This ritual indicates a rite of passage from students to graduates.
(在畢業典禮上，校長為畢業生撥穗。這項儀式象徵著從學生成為畢業生)
註: rite of passage = 成為…的儀式; 成年禮
畢業典禮結束前，常會看到學生將帽子丟向空中，象徵人生中一個章節的結束，即將邁向新的階段。而「將帽子丟向空中」這個動詞的英文就是 toss the cap in the air 或 throw the cap in the air。但就我所知，現在美國及英國不少大學都開始禁止學生做這件事了，有興趣的朋友們可以上網 google 相關新聞。
例句:
At the end of the commencement, graduates toss the caps in the air. It is a symbolic gesture of the end of a chapter in a graduate's life.
(在畢業典禮結束時，畢業生會將學生帽丟向空中。這象徵著畢業生人生一個章節的結束)
